January 24 - Heaven Will Exalt the Omnipotent Christ
And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. - Revelation 5:13
You may have listened to Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor: or Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and said, as the majestic harmonies filled your soul, "How great is God, for He is the One from who all beauty comes!"
If you love the splendors of nature, you probably have stood on a mountain peak and watched in silent wonder as the sunrise lighted the morning sky, and in that moment you may have whispered, "God's world is glorious, for He has made it beautiful!"
The thoughts of our minds would expand and the horizons of our vision would enlarge if we would spend more time in meditation upon the goodness of God. It was the Southern poet Sidney Lanier who found a lesson in the love of God in the marshes. He wrote:
"As the marsh-hen secretly builds on the watery sod,
Behold I will build me a nest on the greatness of God:
I will fly in the greatness of God as the marsh-hen flies
In the freedom that fills all the space 'twixt the marsh and the skies:
by so many roots as the marsh-grass sends in the sod
I will heartily lay me a-hold on the greatness of God."
Before the Breton fishermen set sail upon the ocean they kneel to pray: "O God, help me. My boat is so small. The sea is so large." But thank God, upon that sea the fishing boats can rest! Even so, there is a greatness of the Eternal one that makes us fearful, but in that greatness we can also find security and peace.
Leslie Weatherhead tells the story of a little boy whose father was a surgeon. Someone with an evil intent said to the boy, "Do you know that your father gets people on a table and, when they are unconscious and cannot defend themselves, cuts their bodies with a sharp knife and sometimes takes parts of them away?" The little boy could not argue, but he could rest his mind in the greatness and love of his father. We could imagine him saying "I know my daddy, and I trust him. Someday I'll be able to understand."
Some day when we are gathered around the throne in heaven we shall understand the love, the glory, and the power of our Saviour. Then with all the redeemed of heaven and earth, we shall praise and adore Him forever. - Neff
