And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. - Matthew 24:30
God's triumphant message has sounded the loudest in men's ears in the hour of their deepest distress. When we find ourselves at the end of our own strength, when our own self-reliance is shattered, when we are silenced, lo, the voice of the Almighty is audible.
On one occasion I visited a friend who had a radio receiving set with which he listened to stations in all parts of the earth. That particular evening the reception was poor and the signals were indistinct. After attempting to tune in on programs from Europe and South America without much success, my friend paused and turned out the lights. Only the faint glow of the radio dial could be seen. "I find I can listen better in the darkness. Then I can concentrate, for there is nothing to distract my attention." Perhaps that is the secret of God's dealings with His children. We hear His voice, we seek His will for our lives, when the darkness closes in about us.
We have the assurance that Christ's universal dominion will come. Before that day of triumph we shall be tested; our convictions will be hammered out on the anvil of suffering, but beyond the trials will come the day of glorious reward. Then we shall see Jesus face to face.
Our Saviour is coming to earth again with "power and great glory." When He walked among men His life was overflowing with spiritual power. "Mighty works are wrought by His hands," says the New Testament writer. There was power in the touch of His hands to bring healing to the sick, to open the eyes of the blind, His hands will be outstretched in love when He comes again as King of kings, and then will His words be fulfilled: "I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand."
