But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. - Psalm 1:2
A burglar entered a luxurious home and stole some valuable jewels. There seemed to be no clue to the robber's identity. Finally the police found a fingerprint of the culprit on an alabaster bust of Hofmann's Christ. Confessions later revealed that as the burglar had entered the house, his gaze fell on the face of Jesus. Before he took anything he turned the statue to the wall, but he left a fingerprint on the bust, and by that he was detected.
How symbolic is this experience of human life. Our actions are justified or condemned by the perfect life of Jesus. By looking at Him we know the truth, for He kept His Father's commandments. Furthermore, the Master said, "If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments." Matthew 19:17.
This is our challenge. If we desire to live in harmony with the universe we will obey the commandments of God. If you would test your thoughts and desires, look at our Example and ask, "What would Jesus think and do?"
Do I obey God because I am afraid of the punishment I will receive if I do wrong? If this is my reason for keeping God's law, I shall never receive eternal life. Heaven recognizes but one motive for obedience - LOVE. "If you really love me," said Jesus, "you will observe my commands." John 14:15.
No man can keep God's law through fear or with selfish zeal. The law of Christ is giving; the love of Christ is serving. Love creates love. When we behold the matchless love of our Saviour, our hearts are transformed and we seek to do His will and to obey His commandments. - Neff
