July 8 - The Lord searches Our Hearts

O Lord, Thou hast searched me, and known me. - Psalm 139:1

If the Searcher of hearts should look into your life and mine, what would he find? Is there an emptiness of mind that would make us ashamed? Perhaps we would try to make the excuse that we live in a noisy world where cares and duties crowd in upon us. And we might argue, What opportunity do we have to meditate on spiritual truths?

There was another busy age, however, when the Roman legion marched through the land. The market place was a babble; the shouts of political leaders were heard in the streets. Surely there was little opportunity for real thinking. Yet amid this turmoil one man found time to use his mind for God. As we read the biography of John the Baptist, we find that "the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness." Luke 3:2.

John the Baptist refused to let his mind be clouded with the petty affairs of a workaday world. He wanted to think; he wanted to listen to the still, small voice. He made the time and the place where he could have quietness, and it was there that God spoke to him.

Ten minutes of meditation each morning will give spiritual power for the day. We need to stop in the wilderness of modern living and seek God's will. Meditation! Thought! These seem to be the forgotten essentials of Christian growth, but they are most needful. If the Searcher of hearts should look into your mind today, would He find it filled with His Word? Would He find thoughts of love and peace? - Neff
